Deepfake Technology: An Evolution and Its Effect on Misinformation

In recent years, deepfake technology has rapidly evolved from a niche AI experiment into a mainstream digital threat. Powered by deep learning algorithms, deepfakes manipulate audio, video, and images to produce hyper-realistic but entirely fake content. While the technology itself has revolutionary potential in fields like entertainment, accessibility, and education, its darker side is increasingly being used to misinform, deceive, and even destabilize.
My research focuses on how the evolution of deepfake technology contributes to the spread of misinformation across social media platforms and digital communication channels. We examine how multi-modal deepfakes — those combining facial expressions, voice tones, and even textual content — are becoming more difficult to detect with the naked eye or traditional algorithms.Through a neurosymbolic and emotion-inconsistency-based detection approach, our work aims to identify these synthetic manipulations by analyzing mismatches between what is seen, heard, and said. For example, if a video shows a calm face but the audio expresses anger or urgency, our system flags that as a potential inconsistency — an early warning signal for manipulation.
We also explore how these AI-generated falsehoods influence public trust, political discourse, and mental health. Misinformation embedded in deepfakes not only distorts reality but also erodes confidence in legitimate media. It becomes harder for citizens to distinguish fact from fiction, especially in high-stakes areas like elections, health crises, or international conflict.Our project seeks not only to improve detection techniques but also to raise awareness about the ethical responsibilities that come with developing such powerful tools. Ultimately, combating deepfake misinformation requires a combination of advanced AI solutions, public education, policy reform, and cross-sector collaboration.
As the line between real and fake blurs, the fight against digital deception becomes one of the defining challenges of our time. Our goal is to help develop trustworthy systems that detect and prevent misuse before truth itself becomes another casualty in the age of AI.
